UKRAINE KHARKIV CITY HALL
White ink and charcoal on A3 black paper
The image of Kharkiv City Hall was stuck in my mind after watching the news, even though I was sketching the Pokrovsky Monastery. I started this sketch on 17 March and only completed it on 28 March, the most number of days I took to finish a sketch by far due to hectic schedule. I did think of just leaving it unfinished but its image kept coming back. So I know I had to finish this. While I was at the end of finishing, my mind saw smoke coming out from the top of the building, which was not present when I watched the news. Eventually, I saw wings that brings healing in the smoke. When I finished the sketch, I decided to use the white charcoal to draw in some faint smoke with whirling wings.
“But to you who fear My name
The Sun of Righteousness shall arise
With healing in His wings;”
– Malachi 4:2
Collateral damage was the other word that kept popping up in my mind. This damage is not only on Ukraine. Many civilians in Russia are also being affected deeply. I am not sure what kind of objective justifies costing so many people so much.
